- The book presents a series of 16 photographs that are part of a continued exploration of John Cage's compositional techniques that began with Whitaker's solo exhibition titled 'The Use of Noise' at Thierry Goldberg Gallery, New York. 'Imaginary Landscape No. 1' borrows the phrase-length structure of a John Cage composition from 1939 of the same name. Using light leaks to attribute numerical values to photographs, it takes the original Cage composition's structural principle and applies it to the organization of photographs.
