内容:
A series of lectures prompted Petra Christine Hardt to write these three essays, which have now been compiled in a single volume offering the reader informed insight into day-to-day practice in the rights and permissions departments of European publishing houses. The book also addresses key underlying issues such as the protection of intellectual property, the length of copyright, contract duration and appropriate royalty rates for authors, each of these aspects being considered within the framework of a wider social context. Rights: Buying, Protecting, Selling. is a plea for contractual values that-platformed on the author's contract as baseline-serve to foster a long-term relationship between author and publisher. Of crucial importance is the question of striking the right balance between the task of liaising with the author and supervising works-in-progress on the one hand, and the economic fundamentals of the publishing industry on the other. Acquiring, securing and distributing the rights to a work, as assigned to a publisher by an author, are the chief focus of the content. Further subjects covered include the challenges posed by cooperation with agencies and the growing significance of the Internet as a global marketplace for copyrighted works. Critical examination of these issues is accompanied by practical proposals for their solution, giving the volume a very 'how-to' slant-making it the perfect reference not only for staff in rights departments but also for editors and authors.
